Über den Autor Paul E. Reed

Paul E. Reed is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Alabama. His research focuses on the sociophonetic variation and change in the English varieties of the American South and Appalachia. He is the co-author (with Katie Carmichael) of the book Language and Place (CUP). His work has appeared in PLoS One, the Journal of Phonetics, American Speech, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, the Journal of Speech-Language and Hearing Research, WiRES Cognitive Science, and in several collections, including Language Variety in the New South: Change and Variation, Appalachian Englishes in the 21st Century, among others. The focus on his work is the impact of local place-based identity, what he has termed 'rootedness', on several phonetic aspects of language. Becky Childs is Professor of Linguistics in the Department of English and Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Letters at James Madison University. She is co-editor of Data Collection in Sociolinguistics (Routledge)and has had publications appear in journals such as Gender and Language, The Journal of Sociolinguistics, The Journal of English Linguistics, the Journal of Appalachian Studies, and Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory. She has worked extensively on African American English, Appalachian English, Bahamian English, and Newfoundland English, providing a more nuanced and intersectional lens for contextualizing English language variation in contemporary society.
