A Time of Gifts and Between the Woods and the Water were the first two volumes in a projected trilogy that would describe the walk that Patrick Leigh Fermor undertook at the age of eighteen from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. 'When are you going to finish Vol. III?' was the cry from his fans; but although he wished he could, the words refused to come. The curious thing was that he had not only written an early draft of the last part of the walk, but that it predated the other two. It remains unfinished but The Broken Road - edited and introduced by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper - completes an extraordinary journey.

Über den Autor Patrick Leigh Fermor

PATRICK LEIGH FERMOR, wurde 1932 der Schule in Canterbury verwiesen, weil er sich »in ein Mädchen beim Gemüsehändler verguckte«. Während der Aufnahmeprüfung in die Armee hatte er die fabelhafte Idee, nach Konstantinopel zu wandern ... Drei Jahre lang organisierte er als britischer Agent auf Kreta den Widerstand, konnte 1944 den deutschen General Kreipe gefangennehmen und wurde ein Held. (Verfilmt wurde diese Begebenheit aus Fermors Leben mit Dirk Bogarde in der Hauptrolle. Titel des Spielfilms: Ill Met by Moonlight.) Fermor reiste in die Karibik, wo der Reisebericht The Traveller"s Tree und Die Violinen von Saint-Jacques, sein einziger Roman, entstanden. Patrick Leigh Fermor zählt zu den bedeutendsten englischsprachigen Reiseschriftstellern. Er verstarb am 10. Boyle und Oliver Sacks. 2007 erhielt er den Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt-Übersetzerpreis.
