Über den Autor Selma Lagerlöf

Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf (1858-1940) wurde in der schwedischen Provinz Värmland geboren. Nach ihrem Studium in Stockholm trat sie ihre erste Stelle als Lehrerin in der Hafenstadt Landskrona im Süden des Landes an. Zu dieser Zeit verfasste sie ihren ersten Roman, »Gösta Berling«. Als 1895 die zweite Auflage des Buchs erschien, konnte sie die Lehrtätigkeit aufgeben und sich ganz dem Schreiben widmen. Dank eines Reisestipendiums des Königs und der Schwedischen Akademie lernte sie Europa kennen und reiste bis nach Ägypten und Israel. Wieder in Schweden erlangte sie weiteren literarischen Ruhm mit ihrem Auswandererepos »Jerusalem« (1902/1903) und dem von der Schulbehörde in Auftrag gegeben Lesebuch »Die wunderbare Reise des kleinen Nils Holgersson mit den Wildgänsen« (1906). Zu den wichtigsten Auszeichnungen ihres Lebens gehören die Aufnahme als erstes weibliches Mitglied in die Schwedische Akademie im Jahr 1914 und der Literatur-Nobelpreis, den sie 1909 als erste Frau erhielt. Das Preisgeld ermöglichte es Lagerlöf, den Gutshof Mårbacka zurückzukaufen - ihre Eltern hatten das Anwesen wegen hoher Verschuldung aufgeben müssen. Nach dem Umzug auf das Landgut widmete sie sich neben dem Schreiben vor allem der Landwirtschaft und ihrer kleinen Fabrik, in der sie Hafermehl produzierte.
