This collection of essays represents the result of an intense process of discussion among many of the authors, who have been invited to combine theoretical considerations on the question sketched above, with concrete case studies based upon original archival research. From Istanbul to Aleppo, and from the Balkans to Jerusalem, what emerges from the book is a renewed image of the imperial and local mechanisms of coexistence, and of their limits and occasional dissolution in times of change and crisis.

Raising questions of governance and changes therein, as well as epistemological questions regarding what has often been termed 'cosmopolitanism', this book calls for a closer investigation of incidents of both peaceful coexistence, as well as episodes of violence and conflict. A useful addition to existing literature, this book will be of interest to scholars and researchers in the fields of Urban Studies, History and Middle Eastern Studies.

Über den Autor Ulrike (Hrsg.) Freitag

Die HerausgeberUlrike Freitag ist Dipl.-Ing. für Informationsverarbeitung (TU Dresden) und seit 2000 Sprecherin des Arbeitskreises "Umweltinformationssysteme" der Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI) sowie Mitglied der Fachausschussleitung der Fachgruppe "Informatik im Umweltschutz". In der Firma Condat AG betreut sie das Thema Umweltinformatik.Prof. Dr.-Ing. Frank Fuchs-Kittowski studierte Informatik (TU Berlin) und ist Professor für Umweltinformatik an der Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft (HTW) Berlin sowie Bereichsleiter für Umweltinformationssysteme am Fraunhofer FOKUS. Den Schwerpunkt seiner Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeit bilden mobile Anwendungen sowie Wissens- und Kooperationssysteme im Umweltbereich und Katastrophenschutz.Dr. Andreas Abecker ist diplomierter (TU Kaiserslautern) und promovierter (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie) Informatiker, arbeitete in der angewandten Forschung am DFKI Kaiserslautern und am FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik Karlsruhe und leitet seit 2010 das Innovationsmanagement bei der Disy Informationssysteme GmbH.Friedhelm Hosenfeld studierte Informatik (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel) und ist bei DigSyLand (Institut für Digitale Systemanalyse und Landschaftsdiagnose - Partnerschaft Hosenfeld & Rinker, Naturwissenschaftler) als Mitinhaber und Geschäftsführer schwerpunktmäßig im Bereich Umweltinformatik tätig.
