The Love Books Ovid - The Love Books of Ovid is a collection of four works of Roman poet Ovids verses on love in English prose translation. Ovid, born in 43 B.C., a contemporary of Virgil and Horace, lived during the reign of Augustus and is perhaps best remembered today for his work on Roman mythology entitled The Metamorphoses. This volume collects the poets following works: The Loves, The Art of Love, Loves Cure, and The Art of Beauty. Ovid was an innovator in the writing of love poetry in that he changed the focus of the poem from the poet to love itself and examined the effect of love on people. These works were considered controversial in their time and many scholars believe that Ovids The Art of Love was the cause of his life-long banishment by Augustus to a remote province on the Black Sea. Considered to be a master of the elegy form of poetry, which are poems of lamentation and mourning, and the last of the Latin love elegists, Ovid is faithfully represented here in this English prose translation. Students of classical literature and fans of romantic poetry will both delight in this volume of works by a poetic master. This edition is follows the translation of J. Lewis May.

Über den Autor Ovid

Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso, 20. März 43 v. Chr. Sulmona - um 17 n. Chr.) prägt mit seinen »Metamorphosen« das Bild der Nachwelt auf die griechische Mythologie. Nach einem Studium der Rhetorik in Rom reist Ovid zu Studienzwecken nach Kleinasien und Griechenland. Eine Laufbahn als Beamter bricht er ab und beginnt eine außerordentlich erfolgreiche Dichterlaufbahn in Rom. Aus ungeklärten Gründen wird er 8 n. Chr. auf Geheiß des Kaisers Augustus an den Rand des Imperiums nach Tomi, dem heutigen rumänischen Konstanza, verbannt. Seine literarische Frühphase ist geprägt von erotischen Dichtungen wie »Amores« (»Liebesgedichte«) und »Ars amatoria« (»Liebeskunst«). In der darauffolgenden Phase nimmt er sich großen Sagenzyklen an: Er ergründet mit »Fasti« das römische religiöse Brauchtum und beginnt mit seinen Verwandlungsgeschichten - den »Metamorphosen«, die er im Exil beendet. In Tomi entstehen »Tristia« (»Klagelieder«), in denen er sein Leben Revue passieren lässt und sein Schicksal beklagt. Manche dieser Dichtungen, daneben auch ein Lobgedicht auf Augustus und Tiberius, sollen eine Begnadigung erzielen - ohne Erfolg. Ovid stirbt acht Jahre nach seiner Verbannung im Exil. Michael von Albrecht, geboren 1933, studierte in Stuttgart, Tübingen und Paris Musik, Klassische Philologie und Indologie. Nach der Promotion 1959 und der Habilitation 1963 lehrte er in Heidelberg als Ordinarius für Klassische Philologie (1964-1998) und als Gastprofessor in Amsterdam und USA. Ehrendoktor der Aristoteles-Universität in Thessaloniki (1998), Rußlanddeutscher Kulturpreis (1991), Praemium Classicum Clavarense 2000. 2004 wurde v. Albrecht mit dem »Johann-Heinrich-Voss-Preis für Übersetzung« der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung ausgezeichnet, u. a. für seine bei Reclam erschienenen Übersetzungen von Ovid und Catull. Mitglied mehrerer Akademien und Fachzeitschriftenredaktionen. Herausgeber philologischer und musikgeschichtlicher Schriftenreihen und der Georg-von-Albrecht-Gesamtausgabe.
