The House of Atreus - The Oresteia Trilogy of Murder, Vengeance, and Justice

A victorious king returns from war, only to enter a palace poisoned by murder, betrayal, and a curse that has haunted his family for generations. The House of Atreus brings together the three tragedies of Aeschylus's Oresteia: Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides. In Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae returns from the Trojan War to his wife, Clytemnestra, who has never forgiven him for sacrificing their daughter Iphigenia. His homecoming becomes the latest act in a brutal history of family violence, treachery, and revenge. In The Libation Bearers, Agamemnon's son Orestes returns from exile and joins his sister Electra in seeking vengeance for their father's murder. Yet the duty to punish one crime requires Orestes to commit another, trapping him within the same cycle of bloodshed that destroyed the generations before him. Pursued by the Furies, he becomes both avenger and criminal. The trilogy concludes with The Eumenides, in which personal vengeance gives way to public judgment. The gods themselves struggle over Orestes's fate as Athens establishes a court of law to decide whether inherited violence can finally be replaced by justice. First performed in 458 BCE, the Oresteia is the only surviving complete trilogy from ancient Greek drama and remains a towering exploration of guilt, power, family loyalty, divine law, and the birth of civic order.
