This book focuses on the understanding of factors and mechanisms involved in the development of agency mainly in three related contexts --- participatory development, extension work, and service transactions. The research has its starting point in the recognition of the critical role played by "agency" (commonly understood as want/will for and practice of self-determination and self-management) on the part of intended beneficiaries of services and projects for effective implementation and sustainability. It is designed to address this subject matter with its principal focus on inner capacities and orientations of human beings, posing questions as to how such capacities and orientations could be enhanced and activated in practice by external actors in the field of public policies for socioeconomic and international development. The project is organized transcending traditional disciplinary boundaries --- combining anthropological, psychological, and economic approaches and perspectives.

Über den Autor Mine Sato

Mine Sato ist außerordentliche Professorin für internationale Entwicklungsstudien und angewandte Anthropologie und arbeitet derzeit am Institute of Urban Innovation der Yokohama National University. Sie verfügt über verschiedene Arbeitserfahrungen bei internationalen Kooperationsagenturen wie UNICEF, JBIC und JICA als Spezialistin für soziale Entwicklung.  Ihre Hauptarbeitsgebiete sind Zentralamerika und Japan.Nobuo Sayanagi ist Professor für Entwicklungs- und Sozialpsychologie am Yamanashi Eiwa College. Er ist einer der wenigen psychologischen Forscher weltweit, die im Bereich der Entwicklungshilfe tätig sind. Er war als Berater für das Konzept "Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion" (SHEP) der Japan International Cooperation Agency tätig und hat an einer Reihe anderer Projekte mitgearbeitet.   Toru Yanagihara ist emeritierter Professor für internationale Entwicklungsstudien an der Takushoku-Universität und Honorary Research Fellow am Institute of Developing Economies. Er war als Berater für die japanische Regierung und internationale Organisationen tätig, darunter die Universität der Vereinten Nationen, die Weltbank und das Asian Development Bank Institute. Er war Mitglied des Redaktionsausschusses einer Reihe von wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften, darunter World Development und Journal of International Development Studies.
