Über den Autor Stella Gaitano

Stella Gaitano, geboren 1979 in Khartum, ist eine südsudanesische Schriftstellerin und Menschenrechtsaktivistin. Sie begann früh mit dem Schreiben und publizierte Kurzgeschichten auf Arabisch. Ihr Debütroman Eddos goldenes Lächeln (2018) war der erste südsudanesische Roman, der mit einem PEN Translates Award ausgezeichnet wurde. Gaitanos Literatur kreist um Krieg, Vertreibung und Identität. Seit 2022 lebt sie im Exil in Deutschland. Larissa Bender studierte Islamwissenschaft, Ethnologie, Kunstgeschichte und Soziologie in Köln und Berlin sowie Arabisch in Damaskus. Sie ist Literaturübersetzerin, Journalistin und Dozentin für Arabisch und hat zwei Anthologien über Syrien herausgebracht. 2018 erhielt sie für ihr Engagement als Brückenbauerin in die arabische Welt das Bundesverdienstkreuz. 2025 wurde sie für ihre Übersetzung des Romans "Das Schneckenhaus" des syrischen Autors Mustafa Khalifa mit dem "Scheich-Hamad-Preis für Übersetzung und internationale Verständigung" ausgezeichnet.
