Über den Autor Euripides

Euripides (um 485/484 oder 480 v. Chr. auf Salamis - 406 v. Chr. in Pella) wird neben Sophokles und Aischylos zu den drei großen Tragikern der Antike gerechnet. In »Die Troerinnen« blicken die nach dem verlorenen Trojanischen Krieg hinterbliebenen Frauen einer ungewissen Zukunft entgegen - begleitet von einem Ensemble antiker Persönlichkeiten. Geht es in »Medea« um den grausamen Rachefeldzug einer von ihrem Mann zurückgelassenen Frau, feiert der Gott Dionysos in »Die Bakchen« eine zerstörerische Orgie aus Euphorie und Untergang. Seine Rezeption zu Lebzeiten ist zweigeteilt: Von den einen wird er für seine Modernität gefeiert, anderen dient er als Zielscheibe des Spotts wie etwa in Aristophanes' »Die Frösche«.
