Playwright and author Lonnie Coleman was born in 1920 in Barstow, Georgia. In 1944 while serving in the United States Navy, he published his first novel, Escape the Thunder, and later worked at Ladies' Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, and McCall's. His books were often noted for their nuanced exploration of racial relationships in the south and his other novels include Clara, The Golden Vanity, his largely autobiographical novel, Mark, and his New York Times bestselling Beulah Land trilogy. Coleman died in Savannah, Georgia, in 1982.
