John Stuart Mill (20.5.1806 Pentonville - 8.5.1873 Avignon), britischer Philosoph und Ökonom, ist einer der bedeutendsten liberalen Denker und Utilitaristen des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sein Vater James Mill, Historiker, Philosoph und Anhänger des Utilitarismus, lässt seinem hochbegabten Sohn John Stuart eine ausgezeichnete humanistische Ausbildung zukommen. John Stuart Mill liest mit 12 bereits antike Texte im Original und verfasst erste eigene Abhandlungen. Mit 14 Jahren studiert er in Montpellier und beginnt mit 17 seine Arbeit bei der Ostindischen Handelsgesellschaft. Sein breites Wissen setzt er auf den Gebieten der Sozialökonomie, Ethik und Philosophie ein. Mill verteidigt 1861 in »Utilitarism« (dt. »Der Utilitarismus«) die utilitaristische Theorie, nach der eine Handlung dann moralisch ist, wenn sie den Gesamtnutzen (Glück) der Gesellschaft steigert. Eine Anleitung, wie der Utilitarismus ökonomisch eingesetzt werden kann, veröffentlicht Mill bereits 1848 mit seinem Hauptwerk »Principles of Political Economy« (dt. »Prinzipien der politischen Ökonomie«): Die eigentliche Aufgabe der Ökonomie läge darin, die gesellschaftlichen Gegebenheiten zur Entfaltung und Freiheit jedes Individuums zu schaffen - Gedanken, die er in seiner Abhandlung »On Liberty« (dt. »Über die Freiheit«) konsequent weiter verfolgt. Gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Harriet Taylor setzt er sich mit »The Subjection of Women« (dt. »Die Unterwerfung der Frau«) für die Gleichberechtigung von Frauen ein. Seinen positivistischen Denkstil formuliert Mill in »Principles of Logic« (dt. »Prinzipien der Logik«) aus: Nur der Induktionsschluss (der logische Schluss vom Speziellen auf das Allgemeine) wäre die einzig richtige methodische Vorgehensweise der Philosophie.
