The financial crisis, growing social inequality, precarious employment contracts against the backdrop of growing migrant populations have pushed "the economy" into the forefront of current socio-political debates. The articles in this issue rely on a broad definition of economics and inquire into the interaction between gender and other differential categories in the context of material culture, loans, debt and asset arrangements. The economic actions of men and women are proving to be very closely linked with social relationships and logics - indeed well into the 20th century. The extent to which cultural phenomena have influenced economic sectors, gender hierarchies and regulatory authorities becomes manifest at once. The articles also demonstrate the potential of a history of interconnections, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of economic processes.

Über den Autor Margareth (Hrsg.) Lanzinger

Siglinde Clementi is the academic coordinator of the Centre for Regional History in Bressanone. She has led numerous research projects, including the current projects "Rural Society in Tyrol in the 16th Century: Households in Different Socio-Economic Contexts" and "Gender Relations among the Tyrolean Nobility, 1500-1700". Her main areas of research include wealth and kinship, inheritance and marriage, nobility, medicine, the body, gender history, historical anthropology, microhistory and research on ego-documents. Main publication: Body, Self and Melancholy. The Self-Narratives and the Life of the Nobleman Osvaldo Ercole Trapp (1634-1710) (Routledge Series of Cultural History), London/New York 2024.Margareth Lanzinger is Professor of Social and Economic History from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries at the Department of Economic and Social History at the University of Vienna. She is a member of numerous international networks and editorial boards. Her research interests lie in social history, historical anthropology, microhistory, gender history and the history of administration. She has worked extensively on issues relating to property, marriage, kinship and transitional legal spaces. She has led several research projects and is currently the PI of the ERC AdG ALPINNKONNECT "Agents of Logistics and Infrastructure in Eighteenth-Century Alpine Transit Traffic".
